I spend many Friday evenings driving to Long Beach with a truck full of tools and supplies. After enough years of doing that, you notice when the Peninsula starts to change. If you ask me about the best time to visit Washington coast, my answer is September through mid-October. It is the sweet spot because it’s not crowded, the weather is still good, and it tends to be less windy.
By September, Long Beach feels different. There is more room on the beach, and the calmer days make it easier to stay outside longer. I can work around one of the houses, walk down to the ocean, and still want to be outside later in the day.
Best Time to Visit Washington Coast: Why I Like Early Fall
By September, the summer crowds have thinned out, but we still get plenty of days when you can spend most of your time outside. That is the balance I like.
I do not need the hottest day of the year. Give me a morning on the beach, enough good weather to work or sit outside in the afternoon, and a reason to stay out after dinner.
Bring a rain jacket anyway. You are still coming to the Washington coast.
Less Wind Makes a Big Difference
The wind is another reason I like September through mid-October. In my experience, it tends to be lighter during this stretch, and you notice that pretty quickly when you are spending time on the beach.
A calmer day means you walk farther. You can sit outside with coffee, stay on the sand longer, or go back down after dinner without the wind making the decision for you.
You can still get a windy day. I would never promise anyone a particular forecast at the coast. After spending a lot of time here, I can only tell you this is one of the periods I look forward to most.
The Peninsula Is Quieter
September also gives you more room.
That matters on a beach where the thing I enjoy most is sometimes doing almost nothing. Walk. Let the dog sniff everything. Find a piece of driftwood to sit on. Look out at the Pacific for a while before deciding what comes next.
There is less pressure to make a whole production out of the day. You can drive north, stop somewhere because it looks interesting, come home early, or spend an afternoon at the house. For me, that freedom is a pretty big part of a vacation.
If your idea of the best time to visit Washington coast has more to do with how the trip feels than squeezing in the maximum number of activities, early fall makes a lot of sense.
September Is When the Cranberries Start Looking Like Cranberries
There are also things happening around the Peninsula that fit this time of year.
The Cranberry Museum is at 2907 Pioneer Road in Long Beach, and there is a self-guided bog walk you can do year-round. September is when the berries are ripening, followed by the harvest in October. Cranberries have been grown on the Peninsula for about 150 years.
I like places like this because you come away knowing something about where you are. You can see the bogs from the road all year, but walking through one when the berries are turning red makes a lot more sense than just driving past.
Drive North and Let the Peninsula Get Quieter
If you have a free morning, drive north.
Oysterville was settled in 1854, and it still feels very different from Long Beach. Stop at Oysterville Sea Farms for Willapa Bay oysters and clams, then keep going north toward Leadbetter Point.
Leadbetter Point is at the far northern end of the Peninsula, with preserved coastal forest and wildlife as part of the Willapa National Wildlife Refuge. Nahcotta is another worthwhile stop, especially around low tide, when the working oyster side of Willapa Bay becomes much easier to see.
You do not need to turn any of this into an itinerary. Pick one place, stay longer than you planned, and come back another day for the rest.
This Is Also When I Want a Good House to Come Back To

Early fall is one of those times when I think the house becomes a bigger part of the trip. You can spend most of the day outside, then come back early enough to cook, get in the hot tub, or sit outside if the evening stays calm.
I have five Beachhousewa homes on the Long Beach Peninsula, and they are all within walking distance of each other. I built or remodeled each one around the same idea: I want the house to be somewhere you actually enjoy spending part of your vacation, instead of just a place to sleep.
If you are coming with a larger group, Ocean Trail has six total bedrooms, two master suites, an unobstructed Pacific view, and private beach access. Seagrass has five total bedrooms including three master suites, an ocean view, a large game room, and a volleyball court.
For a smaller trip, Lewis and Clark each have two master suites with king beds. They share the bocce, pickleball, and sand volleyball courts, and both give you a short walk to the beach. Clark is the newest of the five, with a steamer shower, outdoor soaker tub, Hot Spring hot tub, and a kitchen I put a lot of thought into.
Then there is Beach Cabin, the first beach house I bought. I spent years remodeling it, and the grounds are now filled with flowers, succulents, herbs, and all kinds of plants. The pergola is the center of the outdoor space, with the hot tub and custom fire table where people naturally end up spending time.
If you want to compare the houses, you can see all five Beachhousewa homes.
You Still Have Plenty to Do
One of the nice things about September is that you do not have to choose between being outside and having places to go.
Cape Disappointment is about an eight minute drive south of Long Beach. You have forested trails, Waikiki Beach, two lighthouses, historic military sites, and the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center if you want to spend some time learning about the history of the area. My Cape Disappointment State Park guide has more details if you want to spend part of the day there.
Every Season Has Its Reason
September through mid-October is my sweet spot, but I would never tell someone it is the only good time to come to Long Beach.
Summer has its own energy. The days are busy, there are more people in town, and many of the events people associate with Long Beach happen during that season. Later in fall and into winter, the weather becomes part of the experience. Watching a storm come in off the Pacific, then going back to a warm house, is a completely different kind of beach trip.
Clam season can also give you a reason to come outside the summer months, depending on the approved digging dates. Some guests want activity and events. Others want dramatic weather, a quiet house, and nowhere they need to be.
For me, September through mid-October sits right in the middle. Summer, winter, and spring all have their own reasons to come, but September through mid-October is the time I personally look forward to most.
If you are planning a few days on the Peninsula, take a look at all five Beachhousewa homes and choose the one that fits the way you like to vacation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is September the best time to visit Washington coast?
For me, September is one of the strongest answers to the question of the best time to visit Washington coast. Summer crowds have started thinning out, the weather can still be very good, and I tend to notice less wind on the Peninsula. That combination makes it easier to walk farther, stay on the beach longer, and enjoy the outdoor spaces back at the house.
Is the Washington coast crowded in September?
September generally feels quieter once the main summer vacation period ends. Individual weekends and events can still bring more people to Long Beach, so it is worth checking the local calendar when choosing your dates. The difference I notice most is the overall pace. The Peninsula starts feeling like it has more room again.
Is October too rainy for Long Beach, Washington?
Early October can still be a great time to be in Long Beach. I like the first half of the month because you can still get good days outside, and the Peninsula is usually much quieter than it is in summer. As you get later into October, rain and stronger weather become more likely. That can still make for a great coast trip, but it starts to feel like a different kind of visit, with more time around the fire, in the hot tub, or watching the weather come in.
Is Long Beach windy in September?
One of the reasons I like September so much is that we tend to get less wind. In my experience, that can make a noticeable difference when you are walking the beach, sitting outside, or spending a long afternoon near the water. You can still get a windy day. This is the Washington coast, and the weather always gets the final say.
What should I pack for the Washington coast in early fall?
Bring layers, a waterproof outer layer, comfortable walking shoes, and something warm enough for an evening outside. I would pack for both a sunny beach walk and a rainy afternoon instead of trusting a single forecast several days in advance. The nice thing about staying in a comfortable house is that changing weather does not have to derail the day.
