Thanksgiving on the Coast: All the Comforts of Home, None of the Hosting Stress

Thanksgiving on the Washington Coast | Beachhousewa

Hosting Thanksgiving sounds exciting until you start doing the math.

How many people are coming? Do you have enough bedrooms, enough seats at the table, enough plates, glasses, and serving dishes? Is the kitchen big enough for several people to cook at once? And once dinner is over, is there enough space, and enough to do, so no one spends the rest of the weekend bored?

That is before you even get to the grocery shopping, cleaning, cooking, and getting the house ready for overnight guests.

Spending Thanksgiving on the Washington coast takes some of that pressure off. Instead of trying to make your everyday home work for a holiday crowd, you can choose a Beachhousewa home based on the size of your group and the way you want to spend the weekend.

Our kitchens are set up for real cooking. There are comfortable spaces for gathering, bedrooms that give people some privacy, and games and entertainment for the hours between meals. That last part matters in November. Long Beach gets plenty of rain, and I have always felt that a beach house should still be a great place to spend the day when the weather keeps everyone inside.

You still get the best parts of Thanksgiving: cooking together, a long meal, games, conversations, and everyone under one roof. Or not quite under one roof. The Beachhousewa homes are within walking distance of one another, so larger groups can spread out across more than one house and still spend the holiday together.

Either way, you get to start with a home that was already designed for people to gather, relax, and enjoy their time together.

Why Thanksgiving on the Washington Coast Works So Well

Thanksgiving is supposed to be about gathering, but gathering can be surprisingly complicated at home. Someone is sleeping in the office. Someone else is trying to watch football while dinner takes over the kitchen. The kids are bored. The dogs are underfoot. By the time the meal reaches the table, the host may have been working for two days.

A vacation home gives the holiday a different rhythm.

You can take your time over breakfast, put a puzzle on the table, walk the dogs on the beach, and ease into Thanksgiving dinner without carrying all the little responsibilities that come with hosting at home, from getting the guest bathroom ready to making sure everyone has a comfortable place to sleep. If the weather turns, you do not need to invent something for everyone to do. I have deliberately put a lot of indoor entertainment into our homes because this is the Washington coast, and rain is part of being here.

Some of my best memories were made on family beach vacations. That has always influenced how I build and remodel these houses. I want people to have places where they can cook, play, talk, spread out for a while, and naturally come back together.

A Thanksgiving Kitchen You Can Actually Cook In

For a Thanksgiving trip, the kitchen matters more than almost anything else.

You are not looking for a place with two pans, four mismatched knives, and just enough dishes for breakfast. You need counter space. You need cookware. You need room for several people to work without spending the afternoon bumping into one another.

The kitchens at Beachhousewa are broadly similar in the way they are set up for real cooking, but Seagrass, Ocean Trail, and Beach Cabin have the larger kitchens in the collection. At Seagrass, for example, there is a gas cooktop, two sinks, generous counter space, and equipment for baking, cooking, and making coffee in several different ways.

That matters when one person is working on the turkey, another is making potatoes, and someone has decided that Thanksgiving is the ideal day to make a pie from scratch.

For a smaller gathering, Clark also has the most extensive and organized collection of utensils and cooking tools. Its kitchen includes generous counter space, two sinks, cookware, baking equipment, a mixer, and a substantial coffee setup.

Room to Be Together, and Room to Get Away

One of the things I have learned from traveling with family is that togetherness works better when people can occasionally get away from one another.

Seagrass is especially useful for a larger family gathering. It has five total bedrooms, including three suites, along with a large game room. The separate apartment above the game room creates another level of privacy for someone who would appreciate a little distance from the main group. Back in the house, the great room keeps cooking, conversation, games, and relaxing connected.

Ocean Trail has six total bedrooms, including two master suites. Its downstairs master is particularly useful when you are traveling with older family members who would rather avoid stairs.

Beach Cabin offers another kind of gathering. It was my first property, and I extensively remodeled it after buying it in 2013. There are two suites, including one on the main floor, plus a loft reached by spiral stairs and a game room. Outside, the pergola is the central outdoor gathering place, with the hot tub and custom fire table creating a comfortable place to spend time together.

For a couple, two couples, or a small family, Lewis keeps Thanksgiving more intimate. Lewis and Clark each have two master suites with king beds and adjoining bathrooms, so two couples can travel together without one getting the obvious second-choice bedroom. Lewis also shares the game courts with Clark, giving you pickleball, bocce, and sand volleyball when everyone is ready to move after dinner.

Thanksgiving Dinner Is Only Part of the Day

A beach Thanksgiving gives you somewhere to go between meals.

Take a morning walk on the sand before the kitchen gets busy. The November air can be brisk, which makes coming back to a warm house and a pot of coffee feel especially good. After dinner, another beach walk is a pretty effective answer to that second piece of pie.

For Thanksgiving 2026, there is also an unusually local possibility. Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife has announced a tentative Long Beach razor clam dig for Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 26, with a 7:35 p.m. low tide. There are also tentative Long Beach digs on November 22 through 28. These openings still depend on final marine-toxin testing, so check WDFW shortly before your trip.

Check current WDFW razor clam dates and approvals

If you have never dug for razor clams, Thanksgiving weekend is a fun time to try it. Check the approved dig before you go, bundle up for the evening tide, and head onto the beach with a bucket. Clam guns are available at the house upon request, so you do not need to buy one just for the trip. If the digging goes well, you can bring your catch back and turn those fresh razor clams into part of the next day’s meal.

Plan for a Rainy Thanksgiving Day

November on the coast can be beautiful, wet, windy, calm, or several of those things in one day. I would plan for all of it.

That is one reason the houses have so much to do inside. At Seagrass, the game room includes a pool table, an 18-foot shuffleboard table, table tennis, foosball, an arcade, and more. The main house also has board games, video games, and puzzles.

At Clark, guests can choose from more than 75 board games, more than 20 puzzles, an arcade cabinet, video games, books, Legos, and Lincoln Logs. Lewis also has a substantial collection of games and entertainment. A rainy afternoon does not have to become the part of the trip everyone waits out.

Then, when the rain stops, go outside.

That changeability is part of the coast. A gray morning can turn into a beautiful walk, and sometimes the best part of the day is simply watching the weather move across the Pacific from somewhere warm.

Explore the Peninsula During Thanksgiving Weekend

If Thanksgiving Day itself is centered around the house, Friday gives you time to explore more of the peninsula.

Cape Disappointment State Park is open year-round from 6:30 a.m. to dusk, with forest, coastal viewpoints, trails, wetlands, and access to some of the most dramatic scenery in this corner of Washington. The Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center is closed on Thanksgiving Day and normally operates Wednesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the winter. If you want to visit later in the weekend, check the current schedule before you go.

You can also keep the day simpler and spend it in Long Beach. Walk the boardwalk, explore downtown, or head back to the beach with no real agenda.

A Beach House for Thanksgiving on the Washington Coast

When I think about Thanksgiving at these homes, I think about the whole weekend, not just the meal. People need room to cook together without everyone getting in each other’s way. They need a comfortable bedroom when they are ready to call it a night. And after a long dinner, they need somewhere to settle in for a game, a conversation, or a few competitive rounds in the game room.

That is a big reason I have put so much thought into the kitchens, gathering spaces, and indoor entertainment at Beachhousewa. November on the Long Beach Peninsula can be rainy, and I never wanted a day inside to feel like a day lost. If the weather clears, the beach is right there. If it does not, there is still plenty for everyone to do.

For me, that is a pretty good Thanksgiving: cook a big meal, let everyone find their own way to enjoy the house, and have enough room that spending several days together still feels comfortable.
